As the Dragon Quest series is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, the recent live stream to commemorate that had a fair few announcements of its own to make. With one of these being the reveal of Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate.

While we got a rather edgy teaser trailer (shown below), nothing of the new game was shown. What we do know though is that the game will be aimed at adults.

Now this is a rather confusing statement without game footage to give some context, but that is not all that this game is changing.

In addition to being aimed at adults, Dragon Quest XII will be changing its combat system and use Unreal Engine 5.

While this all may sound like a big departure from the Dragon Quest tried and tested formula of role-playing game excellence, I am still very curious to see how this will turn out.

If, on the other hand, you want a more traditional Dragon Quest game, then the upcoming Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake may be more to your taste. Taking a leaf out of Octopath Traveler’s book, this looks adorable and is a great choice in terms of a remake.

One big omission on this recent live stream though was the fact there was no new Dragon Quest Builders game revealed. Considering that the first two games followed on from the original Dragon Quest trilogy on the NES, I genuinely expected to see a third Dragon Quest Builders to round the series off.

In any case, we have an all-new mainline Dragon Quest game to look forward to and a lovely HD remake of Dragon Quest III to tie us over in the meantime.
