In a bizarre and random digital promo, AEW President Tony Khan called out new WWE Chief Revenue Officer Nick Khan over rumors that WWE and New Japan Pro Wrestling were in talks. Khan used their shared last name (no relation) for a play-on words, calling Nick Khan a “con man.”
“As we get ready to go live tonight, on Dynamite, on TNT. I just wanted to address—as The Forbidden Door—I just read in the [Wrestling Observer Newsletter] today that New Japan Pro Wrestling has apparently has had talks with WWE’s President Nick Khan,” said Khan, who was somewhat in-character.
“Well, Nick, I have to say, if you’ve been talking to New Japan Pro Wrestling for two months, you’ve gotten a lot done. Just in the last two weeks, I’ve had Yuji Nagata, Ren Narita and Rocky Romero on AEW. I’ve reunited ROPPONGI Vice, I’ve had the New Japan IWGP U.S. champion Jon Moxley defend the title successfully on our show—retaining it—and I have future plans with New Japan Pro Wrestling for the U.S. Title.
“So, you must have really gotten a lot done in the two months, Nick. In fact, I think there’s only room for one Khan in the wrestling business, Nick. And it’s me, it’s Tony Khan. It’s not some con man from Connecticut. Have a fun show tonight, Nick. See you on Dynamite.”
Khan’s “have a fun show” line was in reference to Friday Night SmackDown, which airs on the same night as a pre-empted AEW Dynamite. Dynamite, which will also be the go-home show for AEW Double or Nothing, will air at 10 pm EST, immediately following WWE SmackDown. AEW recently defeated WWE NXT in the Wednesday Night Wars, as NXT moved to Tuesday nights last month.
Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t Wrestling Inc) reported WWE had been in talks with NJPW over a potential working relationship and the talks date back to March or April. Khan is said to be the driving force behind these talks, with Daniel Bryan’s future also playing a role in the reported talks.
Obscure references to “The Observer” as part of a Twitter promo shows just how loudly pro wrestling is willing to dogwhistle in order to appeal to an exponentially smaller, more niche audience compared to pro wrestling’s golden age. Khan’s surprising tirade, however, has already done its job in creating a stir on social media ahead of Dynamite with the AEW flagship bumped to a different timeslot during the NBA Playoffs. Khan quickly became a trending topic on Twitter during SmackDown Live, and interest in an otherwise forgettable AEW Dynamite lineup stands to benefit as well.
