Many artists need to release several albums before they finally reach the top spot on charts all around the world, while just a lucky few are able to develop a large enough fan base as they begin their careers to reach the highest rung on their first try. Olivia Rodrigo is one of those very lucky few.
The 18-year-old singer-songwriter debuts her first full-length (her first musical project of her own, actually) Sour at No. 1 in the U.K., making the nation one of the first in the world to send the title to the peak spot. The set is largely expected to go right to No. 1 in many territories.
Sour was powered by three proper singles, all of which became big hits in the U.K. Rodrigo’s debut single “Drivers License” quickly went to No. 1 in the country, and it held there for an incredible nine weeks, and it still stands as the longest-charting leader of 2021.
Rodrigo followed that huge win up with another, as second Sour single “Deja Vu” worked itself up to No. 11 before the full-length arrived in full. This week, it jumps to No. 4, hitting a new high and instantly becoming the sensation’s third top 10 in the U.K.
Third single “Good 4 U” opened in second place last frame, and this week it rises all the way to No. 1, giving her a pair of chart champions from her debut album.
According to the Official Charts Company, Rodrigo is the youngest musician in the country’s history to score a chart double, meaning she appears at No. 1 on both the albums and singles rankings simultaneously.
As Sour opens at No. 1 and “Good 4 U” climbs to the peak on its respective chart, album cut “Traitor” opens at No. 7, meaning Rodrigo has now landed four top 10 smashes from one project, which is an incredible showing in the U.K.
It’s likely that Rodrigo would have scored more chart placements on the weekly songs ranking, except the Official Charts Company has a rule in place that every artist can only occupy three spaces at once, at least as a lead actor.
