Manchester City and Chelsea go head to head in what is a second all-English Champions League final in three years.

Both sides enjoyed 2-0 wins in the second legs of their semi-finals where they knocked out European heavyweights Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid respectively.

The final in Porto sees the teams with the most impressive squad depth in the English Premier League put their quality to the test with the biggest prize in European club football up for grabs.

Chelsea are looking to win Europe’s most prestigious trophy for a second time having won the tournament previously in 2012, while City will be looking to lift their first-ever European Cup.

It’s a competition City manager Pep Guardiola has been looking to win since he took over at the club back in 2016. His last triumph in the tournament came back in 2011 with Barcelona.

During subsequent spells with Bayern Munich and now City, it’s a trophy that has so far evaded his post-Barca teams of stars.

Reaching this stage of the tournament for the first time remains a big achievement but the ambition is to put the club on the global stage—winning a Champions League final would go a long way towards doing that.

“Sometimes clubs need more finals to win the first one, others need one shot — which will hopefully that will be the case here,” said Guardiola.

“Many things are new for us in this period we live. Back to back [Premier League] titles for the first time [in 2018 and 2019], breaking a lot of records, a semi-final for the second time and now a final for the first time.

“In terms of how excited, delighted, satisfied, we are—nobody can beat us. I am so confident in my team. You cannot imagine how confident I am in my team and what we have to do.”

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel is arriving in the final in slightly different circumstances.

After replacing Frank Lampard at the beginning of the year, he has given the West London club an identity, a playing style, and some hope that their expensively assembled squad could live up to its potential next season.

But the hopes of success aren’t all pinned on next year. They have already managed to scrape into the top four of the Premier League and finished runners-up in the FA Cup under their new German boss.

A Champions League win would be a real statement for the 47-year-old to make after just four months at the club.

“We feel that we have come a long way in the six matches played in the Champions League together after Frank played a fantastic group stage,” said Tuchel.

“We feel that we have worked hard to be here and feel absolutely the hunger. We are happy but not overexcited to be here. We want to be overexcited after the match.

“We are here to win the trophy. Maybe as the slight underdogs, but this doesn’t change anything and we want to leave Porto with the trophy.”

Team News

Both teams were boasting fully fit squads during the week and bar any late withdrawals each manager will be able to pick their strongest XI.

Ilkay Gundogan, who picked up a slight knock against Brighton and sat out the game against Everton, is fit for the final, while for Chelsea Edouard Mendy and N’Golo Kante are both available after recent injury worries.

“The team news is the best news ever, we have a full squad,” said Tuchel. ‘We have no injuries and I hope it stays like that until after we finish [our last] training session.”

What each team’s best XI actually is, is up for debate, and both tacticians have a number of tools to choose from in order to effectively carry out their gameplan.
