I rarely do articles like this, because shows and movies leave Netflix all the time. But this is a unique case, because one of the shows leaving this time is one of my favorites…ever, and what I would argue might actually be the best show on Netflix. That would of course, be Hannibal.
As of right now, Hannibal is scheduled to leave Netflix on June 5, a week from today. Netflix has had the rights to it for a few years now, all three seasons, and while I’m not precisely sure where it will show up next, I’d bet money on Peacock, NBC’s streaming service which also reclaimed The Office from Netflix, given that Hannibal originally aired on NBC.
Hannibal tells the story of Hannibal Lecter and Will Graham, the famous, cannibalistic killer that led to an Oscar-winning movie. And it does the impossible, creating a new iconic series and set of performances that match or even surpass the original iteration. Anthony Hopkins won Best Actor in 1992 for playing Hannibal in Silence of the Lambs, and yet Mads Mikkelsen’s entirely new interpretation of the character for the series is excellent in its own way, a mix of charm and utter brutality that makes for one of the best villains in TV history.
It’s hard to rave about the show enough. It’s genuinely difficult to believe this ever aired on NBC, at any time, given the horrific violence and storylines it contains. It absolutely feels like something you’d see on HBO, both in terms of artistry, performances and the hard R-rated nature of it all.
There have long, long been rumors that Hannibal will be back to continue its story, as it does end on something of a cliffhanger. If you’ve followed the original films, this is essentially a prequel that gets through the Red Dragon storyline, but never to Silence of the Lambs. The IP rights with all this are extremely tricky and all divided up, which is why we now have a CBS Clarice show (which isn’t in the same league as Hannibal at all) and no one is fully remaking Silence of the Lambs itself, which may be the holdup, as that’s the logical place season 4 of Hannibal would go next, most likely.
While it’s not like Hannibal will disappear from existence when it leaves Netflix, if you don’t think you’re subscribing to Peacock or wherever it goes next, take this week and get through all three seasons. You definitely can, and once you start watching, I doubt you’ll be able to stop.
And if Peacock manages to resurrect Hannibal with the original cast and creator for another season, well that will be the day I get a Peacock subscription, mark my words.
