At least eight people were killed in a shooting in San Jose early Wednesday morning, police officials say, an incident that also left the alleged shooter dead.

Key Facts

The shooting took place at a Valley Transit Authority rail yard in San Jose, said Russell Davis, a spokesperson for the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s office.

Eight people died and multiple people were injured following the shooting, though Davis cautioned the number of fatalities could change over time.

The suspected perpetrator — a transit authority employee — is also dead, though the sheriff’s office didn’t elaborate on how the suspect died.

The sheriff’s office also received information about possible suspicious devices at the scene of the shooting, and a bomb squad is currently combing through the rail yard building, Davis told reporters.

Tangent

San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo told reporters the suspect’s home caught fire before the shooting, and nobody was found inside. The sheriff’s office didn’t specify whether the fire and the shooting are linked.
