Far Cry 6 finally has a release date and two brand new trailers, one detailing the game’s story and characters and the other deep-diving into gameplay, including the game’s innovative arsenal and two-player co-op.
The game’s hero, Dani Rojas, is fully voiced and can be played as either a male or female protagonist though the trailers feature Dani the woman.
The story is all about revolution. You play as a freedom fighter in Yara fighting against brutal dictator Antón Castillo and his teenage son Diego played by Giancarlo Esposito (The Mandalorian, Breaking Bad) and Anthony Gonzalez (Coco). Development for Far Cry 6 is being led by Ubisoft Toronto.
The game releases on October 7th on Xbox Series X | S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Stadia, Amazon Luna and for Windows PC exclusively on both the Epic Games Store and the Ubisoft Store.
Other major characters include Clara Garcia, the leader of revolutionary group Libertad, or Juan Cortez, a “jaded ex-KGB spy and guerrilla master.”
One of the game’s twists on the gameplay formula is the “resolver” arsenal that Cortez has put together. This includes miniguns made out of motorcycle engines and missile-firing backpacks.
The whole thing has a very Far Cry 3 vibe—the jungles, the more fleshed out main character, the aesthetic. I know that Far Cry 4 and Far Cry 5 were kind of just coasting on the Far Cry 3 formula, and it’s possible this one will, too, but it actually looks quite a bit better and more compelling than either of those games. A proper “sequel” to 3, especially with Esposito in the villain role. Remember, Vaas Montenegro was played by Michael Mando in Far Cry 3 and Mando and Esposito are co-stars in Better Call Saul.
Anyway, here are the two new trailers.

Gameplay Deep Dive
I’ll be perfectly honest, I’m always excited for a new Far Cry game even when they’re pretty formulaic. Far Cry 5 took place in my home state of Montana which was cool, even if ultimately that game was kind of disappointing.
I’m definitely looking forward to exploring Yara, taking on the role of guerrilla fighter and taking down the regime. I hope it’s as good as it looks. Having a real protagonist to play as—instead of a voiceless cypher—is going to really help, I think, and it’s possible that the character your don’t pick—the male Dani or the female—will still figure into the story. One of the things that made Far Cry 3 so interesting was the fact that you had friends trapped on the island that you had to help rescue. That gave you a little more motivation than just . . . take down the cult or whatever. Maybe in two-player co-op you’ll each pick a different sibling?
Speaking of co-op, I’m very glad it’s included again. Far Cry, like so many other video games, is much more fun with a friend.
October 7th is still a long ways off but I’m looking forward to this one and hopefully I’ll get a chance to preview the game before then and report back. I get the feeling this holiday season will be super, super busy and filled with exciting releases. Buckle up.
