Taylor Swift shocked the world (for a second time) just six months ago by announcing her full-length Evermore, a surprise album nobody saw coming. Now, half a year later, the set has helped the singer-songwriter make history in one more fashion, as fans of the superstar can’t seem to get enough of the title.
According to Billboard, Evermore has broken the all-time record for the most copies sold in a single week for any album offered on vinyl, and it’s not done yet. The project apparently sold more than 40,000 wax records in just three days, beating an all-time record that has held for several years now in less than half a week.
Before this week, the record for the largest single-week sales sum for a vinyl album was held by Jack White, whose solo release Lazaretto managed to sell 40,000 copies in the summer of 2014. Despite facing some tough competition from stars like Paul McCartney, Lana Del Rey and Ariana Grande, all of whom have scored historic sales frames on the format in 2021 alone, the rocker maintained his control over that one bit of history...until now.
Evermore’s total sales count for the first week it was made available on vinyl isn’t yet clear, and it won’t be available for a little while...but it is sure to grow considerably. There are some estimates that put it at twice what it’s already shipped, and perhaps even higher. It looks like Swift isn’t just going to claim this record for herself, but she’s slated to completely shatter the previous best showing.
Swift’s vinyl sales showing is especially impressive considering Evermore isn’t new. The title opened at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in December, and it went on to rule the all-genre chart for three nonconsecutive frames. The project, which served as a follow-up to Swift’s other surprise release Folklore, is about to bound up the albums ranking, returning to the top 10 for another frame close to the top. In fact, if it wasn’t for Olivia Rodrigo’s debut full-length Sour, which is all but certain to retain its control over the No. 1 spot for second week next frame, Evermore could have had a shot at bouncing all the way to the summit, as it could move 100,000 equivalent units.
