Rapper and entrepreneur Demrick and independent producer DJ Hoppa have both been long-time cannabis advocates and fans.
In fact, they even have a strain of their own: Stoney Point – which is also the name of two of Demrick and Hoppa’s collaborative albums.
Since its launch in 2019, the cultivar has become a stoner favorite and one of the most sought-after in the hip-hop community. However, until very recently, the highly coveted herbal variety was only available in select Las Vegas dispensaries.
But things in the cannabis industry change fast: Stoney Point is now available in the artists’ home state of California.
Stoned On Point
Bred by KushCo (not to be confused with the publicly traded ancillary company KushCo Holdings) and named after the Stoney Point Outcroppings park in Los Angeles, this Indica-dominant strain was born from the cross of Franchise Genetics’ Orange Mints and KushCo OG. Testing at more than 31% THC, the cultivar offers a nice touch of CBG and strong terpene flavors: myrcene, limonene, linalool and caryophyllene.
Consumers have reported a potent high, feeling stoned just on point, and balanced mental and physical effects. The taste is fruity and citrusy, with earthy touches.
“The Stoney Point strain is beautiful. Some 1/8ths [of an ounce of cannabis] are only one big frosty nug. The flavor is A-1 and the high is strong but it doesn’t make me tired at all,” Demrick said in an exclusive interview.
Hoppa added, “It's been a goal of ours to have our curated strain available in California so all our fellow Californians can enjoy what we truly love.”
Moving on to the business side of things, Demrick explained why they chose to collaborate with Kush Company on this product.
“KushCo is a staple here in SoCal as far as OG Kush goes, so it was a no-brainer when we got the opportunity to collab with them on a strain,” he declared.
According to the rapper, the team of breeders at KushCo takes growing and creating new genetics very seriously.
“To go from the idea to picking the cross to testing out flavors to actually being on the shelves in Vegas took about 2 years. It took another 2 years to get it into the shops here in Cali, which was a big deal for us.
“Some of the best strains in the world come from California and we wanted to add something to the cannabis industry that we really love to smoke,” he voiced.
Music And Weed: The Chicken And The Egg
While Demrick and Hoppa’s Stoney Point strain launched in 2019, their collaboration on the “Stoney Point” albums started back in 2014.
While one might argue the music came before the weed, the situation was not clear-cut. It’s a chicken and egg kind of situation: Weed always inspired their music, and music inspired their weed (strain).
“Demrick and I began making music together in 2014, and cannabis has always been a common ground for us,” said Hoppa. “Living in the San Fernando Valley, I grew up around a lot of growers who established themselves and their brands in the cannabis market early on, so it was only a natural progression for us to develop and curate a signature strain.”
Demrick had addressed this in a prior conversation: “Being a cannabis lover, basically, my whole life, it was only right that we participate in the business.”
And he added, this time around, “Hoppa and myself have been releasing ‘Stoney Point’ albums for a while. We did a lot of shows at cannabis festivals and we were really on the scene early.”
“It’s all about doing it right,” he’d said during fir first interview – and his thoughts remain unchanged.
“I feel like the game is getting more and more tight knit, and big business is coming in. So, the originators, the people that have been doing this, have been a part of the culture for so long, the big dollars will try to box these people out… So, this is our moment. It's our opportunity to do it on a higher level, where it's in stores, where there’s branding.”
