For the second time in her career, which is still incredibly new, Olivia Rodrigo rules the Billboard Global 200, Billboard’s recently-launched ranking of the 200 most-consumed songs in the world. The teen pop singer-songwriter’s new single “Good 4 U” opens in first place, beating every other track on the planet. Amazingly, this is the second time the superstar has conquered the tally in 2021, and with a second leader to her credit, Rodrigo joins a very small group that already includes two of the biggest names in the music industry.
So far, only three musical acts of any kind have hit No. 1 on the Billboard Global 200 more than once. That’s not entirely shocking, as the chart was launched less than a year ago, but that doesn’t mean Rodrigo’s accomplishment isn’t worthy of noting.
Rodrigo first hit No. 1 on the Billboard Global 200 back in mid-January, when her first-ever single "Drivers License" arrived atop the all-genre tally. The cut then held court in the penthouse for eight weeks, and it still stands as the longest-running leader.
BTS currently hold the record for the most No. 1 hits on the Billboard Global 200, as they have now appeared in the top spot with three different singles. The South Korean vocal band scored the second-ever champion with “Dynamite,” which ended up ruling for four weeks across three different stretches at the top, and that disco smash is still one of the longest-running leaders so far.
Just two weeks after they first hit the summit, BTS returned to No. 1 as a featured act on Jawsh 685 and Jason Derulo’s "Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat)," which ruled for one frame. Before 2020 ended, they landed a third winner, as their Korean-language ballad "Life Goes On" arrived at No. 1 in December.
Ariana Grande has also reached the highest space on the Billboard Global 200 several times, as she collected her second champion less than a month ago. After joining The Weeknd on “Save Your Tears,” the two musicians rocketed to the throne, with the pop singer collecting her second dominator. Her solo cut “Positions” opened in first place last November.
It looks like before any other band or singer can collect a second No. 1 hit on the Billboard Global 200, joining this small club of superstars, one of the names already inducted will improve their standing once again. It’s highly likely that next week, BTS will earn their fourth chart-topper, as their new single “Butter” stands a very good shot at opening in first place, looking at early data.
