Originally released in the Japanese arcades back in 2006, Virtua Fighter 5 is finally going to get a proper release on the PlayStation 4 next week.

According to IGN, Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown will be a PlayStation 4 exclusive. Featuring updated graphics created in an all-new engine as well as new online features.

The development is being handled by a veteran team from Sega AM2 and the Yakuza game studio. It is also being developed as part of Sega's 60th anniversary project.

While we received ports of the original arcade game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 back in 2007, the arcade game was steadily updated until Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown in 2011.

That’s a decade without a proper Virtua Fighter game to speak of and while this is just an updated release of Virtua Fighter 5, I am more than happy to see that happen.

Mainly because Virtua Fighter is a thoroughbred fighting game series. Sega used to be the king of these kind of bedded down and functionally rigorous multiplayer games. However, that pedigree has somewhat fallen by the wayside in more recent years.

While my multiplayer game series of choice was and always has been Virtual On, I have always had a great deal of respect for the Virtua Fighter games and the people that can play them well.

With Virtual On now seemingly abandoned by Sega, I am glad that Virtua Fighter has survived.

Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown will be released for the PlayStation 4 on June 1.
