One staple for business leaders is the continued development of leadership skills. Leadership skills promote the importance of communication, empowering others and creating a vision for the future. These same leadership skills can be used in the home.
Drawing on the experience of more than 200 business leaders, I would like to provide insight into how to effectively employ and apply a few of these same skills in your home life. They include focusing on what you want instead of what you don’t want, sharing power with others in the home and creating a vision for the future. Leadership traits such as these can make all the difference in your home relationships.
1. Focusing On What You Want Instead Of What You Don’t Want
Apply the habit of focusing on what you want in a positive manner by making a list of things you love about your partner. This can easily be applied to children as well. For example, instead of listing what your child does that drives you crazy, make a list of the things you love about your child. Share the list with your partner and/or child.
2. Sharing Power With Others In The Home
As business leaders, we have been taught to empower those around us. Instead of being threatened by others’ success, we encourage it by sharing information with our staff/team and by delegating tasks to those who are better suited to perform them.
As a leader in your home, empower others by sharing information with your partner. For example, share the information you have about the best ways to get your child ready for school each day. Also, share responsibility and tasks by delegating tasks to those who are best suited to perform them. For example, if you are better at folding laundry than your partner, make it your task to fold laundry.
3. Creating A Vision For The Future
Successful business leaders seek feedback from their employees on how they can improve their business or product/service offerings.
In your home life, ask for feedback from those closest to you, such as family and friends. This feedback can be utilized to improve your leadership skills.
For example, you can ask your partner where they would like to see your family five years from now. This will help strengthen the relationship between you and your partner by providing a vision for the future that both of you can work toward together.
By drawing on leadership traits in your home life, you will find it easier to empower others and create strong bonds with those closest to you.
