Just when it looked like The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” was finally about to drop off the Hot 100, possibly for good, it manages to hold on for another frame. By finding space on Billboard’s weekly ranking of the most-consumed songs in the U.S. one more time, the R&B/pop/electronic hybrid makes history in one very important way, and it inches closer to an all-time record.

“Blinding Lights” has now lived on the Hot 100 for an incredible 76 weeks, making it one of the longest-charting tracks of all time. In fact, The Weeknd’s biggest hit yet is now tied with one other tune as the third-longest-charting release ever.

At the moment, “Blinding Lights” is on the same level as Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours,” which also lived on the Hot 100 for 76 weeks about a decade ago.

Leading the way when looking at all tracks that have spent the most time on the Hot 100 is Imagine Dragons’s “Radioactive,” which once found space on the tally for 87 weeks. Behind that tune comes Awolnation’s “Sail,” which held on for 79 turns.

The Weeknd’s accomplishment with “Blinding Lights” is perhaps even more impressive than the track it is tied with and those ahead of it, as Billboard now has a rule in place that may remove it from the Hot 100 very soon. Known as the recurrent rule, it states that if any title has spent at least 20 frames on the list and dips below No. 50, it will be forcibly taken off the tally. It becomes even more strict after a full year, when any song is taken out of commission should it fall below No. 25. While “Blinding Lights” has to abide by this rule, the other tracks mentioned in this article did not.

“Blinding Lights” falls from No. 12 to No. 23 on the latest Hot 100, declining more than 10 spaces as a number of new smashes from J. Cole’s new album The Off-Season, as well as new hits from Nicki Minaj, Drake, Lil Wayne and Olivia Rodrigo all open inside the top 25. The Weeknd’s history-making smash almost fell off the chart entirely, but it held on, and now it will hopefully continue to do so for the coming frames.
